Keep everyone entertained this Christmas with these family favourites…

Forget the hackneyed Christmas classics of charades and Pictionary this festive season, here at the Bath Arms we’ve got a whole host of fun new games for you to try out with your nearest and dearest this Christmas in Wiltshire.

1. Act & React

This is a game for the dramatic among you. Everyone writes down a situation that you would react strongly to, for example; biting into a sandwich only to find it contained a human finger, or treading in something cold and sticky, or waking up to a ghost watching you sleep (you get the picture). These scenarios are then put into a hat and one by one players draw them and act them out, it’s the job of the rest of the group to work out what they are reacting to!

2. Write & Pass

This is essentially a writing and drawing version of Chinese Whispers and it is hilarious. Everyone starts off sat around in a circle (preferably at a table) with a piece of each. Everyone writes a sentence on their piece of paper and passes it along one place to the right. You now have a sentence in front of you which you must illustrate underneath. the paper is then folded so only the drawing can be seen and passed one place to the right.

You now have a picture in front of you and you must write a sentence underneath to describe the picture. The paper is then folded and passed to the right again. This alternate sentence/picture/sentence/picture passing keeps going until either you reach the bottom of the paper or the sheets have come full circle. You then open the paper up and read out the hilarious results.

3. Partners in Pen

Another drawing game, but this time; in pairs. One of you will have a pen and paper and one of you will have a bag full of random household objects. The aim of the game is for the person with the bag to describe an object to the person with the pen and paper and as they draw what is being described, they have to guess what it is they are drawing. It’s best to do this one pair at a time so that everyone can enjoy the hilarity that unfolds!

4. Sing Song Ping Pong

For those of you who have seen the film ‘Pitch Perfect’, you may know this game as the Riff Off, and it’s brilliant. Depending how many people you have playing the game, you may want to split into two or more teams. A theme is then decided, for example; 80s Power Ballads. The first team to sing is whoever can think of a song first. The next team have to then jump in with a song containing a word from the song that’s being sung. Sound a little complicated?

Here’s an example:

“Let the world around us just fall apart, baby we can make it if we’re heart to HEART” (Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us, Starship)

“Once upon a time, I was falling in love, but now I’m only FALLING apart, there’s nothing I can do, a total eclipse of the HEART” (Total Eclipse of the Heart, Bonnie Tyler)

“It’s been so LONELY without you here, like a bird without a song, nothing can stop these lonely tears from FALLING, tell me baby where did I go wrong” (Nothing Compares 2 U, Sinead O’Conner)

“Oh Lord, I pray you give me strength to carry on, ’cause I know what it means to walk along the LONELY street of dreams” (Here I Go Again, Whitesnake)

5. Things

Luckily for you, ‘Things’ is probably the simplest of our fun family games!

You will need:

  • A hat
  • Pens
  • Scraps of Paper

And it goes like this… Someone will say something like ‘Things that make you smile’ and everyone will write something down and put it in the hat. These are then drawn out one by one and everyone has to guess who wrote them- easypeasy! Some good categories to try are: things that scare you, things that make you laugh, things you wouldn’t eat, things you’d never do, and anything else you might be able to think of.

So those are our favourite fun party games that you can play with your family over the Xmas break. They’ll certainly bring a lot of laughter to your festive activities and one this is certain, we’ll most definitely be getting stuck in at the Bath Arms.
